Before the Rough Guides and the Lonely Planets existed photographers Aliki Sapountzi and Colin Watmough travelled overland to Afghanistan in 1971. Living and travelling in a Renault4 they spent a couple of months photographing street life.

After the War: Afghanistan rediscovers its vision

In the months immediately after the Taliban were defeated in Afghanistan in 2001, Ivan Sigal discovered hope in that war-ravaged country, documenting the return of mass media and visual culture to a land that was deprived of both under the former government.

House of the Dust

Film-maker Richard Stanley and his German cameraman Immo Horn left Britain in 1988, fleeing the cash-starved backwaters of the British film industry where Stanley had been miserable making music videos. They joined a UN relief mission to Afghanistan, and this exhibition documents their travels after splitting from the relief mission.

Saraswati fashion show, auction and Afghan party

Edinburgh’s only Afghan shop, Saraswati is located at 35 Guthrie Street, Edinburgh and will be hosting a fashion show at it’s neighbouring venue, the GRV. This fun and informal fashion show will give you a chance to see some of the clothes sold there. The fashion show will be followed by an auction where you will have a chance to purchase clothes you will have seen modelled, some one off pieces and other Afghan crafts, including the well renowned Afghan Carpets.

Nafas

In the Autumn of 2007 Annemette Verspeak and her husband Christopher packed their bags, said goodbye to their house and their cat, and got on a plane to Kabul. Their initial aim was to deliver a series of workshops aimed at redeveloping self-confidence in Afghan women.

Warwick Ball - Afghanistan: A Heritage Lost and Found

Warwick Ball is one of the UK’s most eminent authorities on the archaeology of Central Asia and the Middle East. Although he has directed excavations across Asia, much of his attention has been focused on Afghanistan where he has excavated recently at Bamyan and in the 1970s at the famous Minaret of Jam. He is also the author of several works on Afghan heritage.
